Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges
