The Finnish Team Upsets Two-Time Reigning Title Holders US in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.
Finland's Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of extra time as the Finnish squad pulled off a stunning four to three win over the reigning two-time champion United States on Friday night in the world junior hockey last eight.
"Got to give full credit to the United States," remarked Finnish captain A. Kiviharju. "They are a fantastic squad, full of exceptional players and a well coached team. But I said we were seeking that payback from last year, and I believe we truly deserved it tonight."
In the semi-finals on Sunday, Finland will take on Sweden, while Canada will meet Czechia. The Swedes defeated Latvia six to three, Canada produced a first-period five-goal outburst in a 7-1 romp over Slovakia, and Czechia overcame Switzerland by a six to two score.
Thrilling Final Frame and Extra Session
Michigan State’s Lee Ryker knotted the score for the U.S. team with one minute and thirty-three seconds remaining in the third period and the Notre Dame goalie N. Kempf off for an extra attacker.
Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen found the net in a fifty-five-second span in the third period to hand their team a 2-1 lead. He leveled the score at 2 with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then assisted on his teammate's go-ahead goal with 6:22 on the clock. J. Saarelainen also assisted on the first goal.
Key Contributions and Reactions
The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after being struck in the back of the head against the Swiss and sitting out two games.
"I thought we made good plays for a lot of the game," the defenseman said. "But the little bounces that they got, many of their Grade-A opportunities came from our errors."
His university colleague C. Eiserman handed the United States a two to one edge on a power play with nine minutes and forty-five seconds left in the second period. He accepted a pass from Hutson and beat the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.
Hutson tallied on a fast break 35 seconds into the second. H. Ruohonen tied it at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a quick shot from the left wing.

The U.S. squad fell in their final two games – losing 6-3 to the Swedes on Wednesday night in the group finale – after starting with their first three.
"It has been an honor to coach this group," said the team's coach. "Our guys played a terrific game tonight and fell just a bit short. All credit to the Finns. It's an empty feeling right now, but our players left everything on the ice."
Other Quarter-Final Results
In the second match in Minneapolis, the Canadian team overwhelmed Slovakia with the five-goal first.
Cole Reschny, T. Iginla, Michael Misa, S. O'Reilly and B. Martin tallied in the opening twenty minutes, and Porter Martone and C. Beaudoin scored in the second. Jack Ivankovic made 21 saves.
"Just goes to show how dominant we can be," Martin said. "Going up five-nothing lead, it kind of saps their morale."
In the first quarter-final, A. Frondell netted a pair for Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman L. Sahlin Wallenius had a goal and two assists to aid the Swedish side stay perfect in five games.
In Minneapolis Tomas Galvas, Samuel Drancak, A. Jiricek, Petr Sikora, Jiri Klima and Jakub Fibigr provided the goals for the Czech team.
Relegation Match Result
The German team triumphed in the consolation match, beating Denmark eight to four. Manuel Schams had two goals to ensure his nation keep its place next year in the top division. Denmark dropped to the second tier.
