NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Residents to Share ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens

New York state attorney general has launched a new digital platform asking locals to provide visual evidence of immigration raids throughout New York. This action comes just a shortly after a significant immigration operation disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting widespread outcry.

American Citizens Arrested In Raid

A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Protests erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and documented immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and evaluating any wrongdoings."

Form Details

The form includes fields to upload photos and videos of the incident, along with a field to specify where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which observers say featured dozens of ICE personnel, happened in a popular area of NYC where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are sold daily widely – typically to visitors.

Footage of the operation reveal multiple covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of residents trailed the agents along the roads. An armored truck was observed moving along the urban roads.

Political Response

During a news conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He clarified the individuals were let go on the following day with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This is a militarized effort to incite tension. It is merely a justification to incite violence for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to prevent violence that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the ICE raid escalated – every political contenders criticized the operation, along with NY's governor.

"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.

New York City advocacy organizations voiced concern too.

"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and riot gear to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.

ICE Policies

Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the agency has claimed it will not take into custody American nationals. Yet, external research has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the start of the current administration.

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide recently.

A recent action in the city center was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies targeting ICE are commonplace along with accusations of violence and abusive practices.
