Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest victory of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory represents Norrie's first ever victory over a current world top-ranked player.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in history to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to embrace my game in the closing months of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the greatest victory of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the most in-form player in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event wins, which marked the best series of outcomes in the Spaniard's early professional path.

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly to success at the start as he sailed through the first set. Nevertheless, Norrie gradually fought his way into the match by executing with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling rallies.
