Mystery Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Concerns of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has materialized on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Extensive Occurrence Across Shore
The magenta-hued slime was found on a portion of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.
Examples Taken for Analysis
Examples have been taken and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to variations in nutrients, warmth, rainfall or sunlight".
"These blooms are sometimes called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can color the water reddish," the spokesperson said. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with many species serving as a major source of nourishment for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in these seas is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."
Rising Occurrence Associated with Global Warming
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their rate has grown in the past few years, partially due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that merge to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a rapid growth in their colonies that disturbs the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These events have been likened to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as sea creatures is destroyed or smothered, supplying more nutrients for the bloom.
Recent Catastrophic Event in another region
A southern state recently grappled with a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern shore after a series of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across a vast area. The outbreak left swimmers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to numerous aquatic species across 400 different species, according to agency assessments.
Expert Opinion on the Local Situation
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the beginning of that event said, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been many of these blooms around Tassie of late," she added.
The expert said sea sparkle did not produce harmful substances comparable to the type involved in South Australia's devastating event, but it does ingest microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.
"It's common to observe a bloom of sea sparkle after a bloom of a different species, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Appeals for Response and Public Safety
Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, commented it seemed the potential proliferation had "grown significantly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the primary suspect, citing similar cases elsewhere.
"Thus the state needs to deliver a firm alert here, the government and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to examine the specimens we've collected and we need to notify the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist stated she had anxieties for public safety after experiencing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
Claims of Lifeless Sea Creatures and Demands for Official Intervention
An advocacy organization has documented deceased sea creatures and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist calling the situation as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the state premier to see and "take control the effort that officials must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to understand this is a disaster in the happening, financially as well as for nature."
Official Response
Addressing journalists, the premier stated he was uninformed of any links between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was needed before conclusions could be drawn.
"We must make certain our waterways are ecologically sound and long-lasting," he remarked.
"The 1,200 beaches across Tasmania are our resources and we need to ensure the public and our economy can operate side-by-side to use our seas effectively and sustainably."
