Larian Studios Details Its Application of Generative AI for New Divinity
The developer behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its new project, sparking immense excitement within the gaming community. However, recent comments from the studio's co-founder have introduced a new dimension to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a new clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the team is employing AI technology for particular preliminary functions. These involve fleshing out PowerPoint slides, creating rough visual ideas, and creating placeholder dialogue.
Importantly, Vincke made clear that the shipping content in the game will be authored entirely by human creatives. "Our team is developing all the content in-house," he stated.
Larian is actively growing our roster of writers and are actively putting together dedicated writer rooms.
As visual development is being particularly referenced — we right now have twenty-three visual developers and have job openings for additional talent.
Each initiative we do is additive and designed to letting our team spend additional energy on the creative process.
Every AI system applied correctly is supplementary to a developer's workflow, not a replacement for their craft.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of employing this technology at first sparked unease among portions of the fanbase. In response, Vincke offered further elaboration on social media.
"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, in the same way we use the internet and reference books," he explained. "During the very early planning process we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then replace with original concept art."
He added, "Larian brings on talent for their inherent skill, not for their ability to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had in the past broken down the team's targeted strategy to this technology, defining its use into primary pillars:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: Areas like polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to speedily create basic mock-ups of gameplay ideas to experiment with concepts prior to expensive development.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate emergent player agency, specifically in managing player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.
He specifically stated that key artistic domains — like music composition — are are in no way departments where the studio is replacing human talent. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these very fields.
"Larian is neither shipping a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not planning on cutting creatives to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
