Jurgen Klopp admits coming back to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that rejoining the club is an option. Klopp, post a game-changing near-decade reign that included a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown for three decades, has since taken on positions as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the league title under Arne Slot, though countless followers holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the possibility that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he explained to the podcast host: “I stated I will never coach a different club in England. Therefore in case it's my former club...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“At 58 years old, that means I might decide down the line, I don’t know. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I can just see what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on which situations must arise to bring him back to management, he revealed he isn't eager for a comeback. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “No longing for management; No desire to be in the rain through long matches; I'm glad to skip media briefings multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room per se, but sitting in a restaurant with the team talking freely, that’s nice. We won a lot of games so there was often a very good mood at the club. I can still hear the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears as an instance.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly for his successor, praising him for the tweaks which secured the championship last campaign. The team has suffered a string of losses across various tournaments post heavy investment, but he rubbished the idea that it might signal a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward like Florian Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good balanced team. No need for concern about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect for the team. The Portugal international lost his life in a road accident alongside his brother in July.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, it's his character. It's hard to picture the dressing room absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A profound tragedy for the entire squad also. No one within the club might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that emotionally is difficult. Overwhelming.”
