Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
People have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative familiar with the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."
"After we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Near the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
