The bowler's last Test match for New Zealand was against England in the final month of 2024.
England bowling consultant Southee is still working through what his involvement will be at the upcoming Ashes contest in the host nation.
The former New Zealand pace bowler is expected to be present for the first Test due to his participation in the ILT20 tournament, which begins on December 2 in the United Arab Emirates.
The 36-year-old, 36, took up a position as the English team's pace bowling advisor in the summer after taking 391 wickets in 107 Test matches for New Zealand.
Speaking as the English team for the opening of three Twenty20 games against New Zealand was named, he said of his availability: "We're still working through the situation at the present time.
"We will determine what happens over the next little while."
English pace icon Broad had stated the Australian team as their "worst team since 2010", but the consultant was in no uncertainty over the anticipated challenge during the series, which begins on 21 November.
"In my view there's at any time a bad Aussie side," Southee said.
"Our focus is squarely on our own objectives. In my opinion the caliber of [the English] side that's heading out to Australia is brilliant.
"It should be an thrilling encounter, that series. Not just [are|do] English and Australian people eagerly anticipate it, I think the whole cricket world is."
But, prior to the English team travel to the city of Perth for the opening Ashes Test, they take on the Kiwis in the city of Christchurch on this Saturday.
