Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
